California - Big Sur

Our very first day in Monterey and the sun was shining.  We decided to take a drive down Highway 1 to Big Sur.  From Monterey we headed south to Carmel and from there we drove along some of the most breathtaking coastline I have ever seen.

This highway hugs the side of the Santa Lucia Mountains to the east with nothing but the beautiful Pacific Ocean to the west.  Very dramatic views...

There are turnouts all along for people to pull over and soak in each site.  At one of the first ones we stopped at we spotted our first sea otter!  The water was really churning, but he seemed to enjoy it.  We saw him diving, eating, and just relaxing in the edge of some kelp.  So cute!

At another stop we could see whales swimming off shore!  Talk about excited :)!  We would see the puffs they make when they come up for air and the tops of their backs rolling through the water.  We never did see one dive though, that's when their tail sticks up out of the water.  So amazing to see these new (to us) creatures :)

Then, we saw the most amazing creatures of all!  Some cows!  Hahaha, just kidding.  But we did see some cows.  How awesome would that be to have a farm right on the beach?  The best of both worlds if you ask me :)

There was a lighthouse near the cows, too. (Betcha don't hear that everyday)

We drove over the Bixby Bridge.  It was pretty...

For lunch, we stopped at a little restaurant we came to as we were driving through the forested part of hwy 1.  The food was good, but a bit pricey.  I would recommend taking along a picnic.  There are just too many beautiful places to stop and have a picnic instead of eating inside anywhere.  Just my opinion :).  I wanna back up a sec and mention the forest.  The forest had Coastal Redwoods and they smelled so good.  The ocean breeze mixed with a cedar smell, so nice.  If you drive through there, make sure you have your windows down :)

We drove south for a while longer just enjoying the views...

Then, we turned around and headed back north towards Pacific Grove.  **It's getting late and I'm tired from being at the beach all day today, so...I will tell you about PG tomorrow.  Good night!
