Kennebunk Beach, Maine

As we were driving south along Rt 1, we had time for one last stop before dark.  We chose Kennebunk Beach and were happy to find some SAND mixed in with all the rocks :).

Don't get me wrong, the beaches covered entirely in rocks are pretty, too (so are the ones that are just sand)...but when you can have both at the same time, then all the better :)!

The rocks are excellent for climbing and just beg to be explored...

Not long after we arrived, Trevor found a nice piece of sea glass tucked in amongst the rocks.  It is a piece of a bottle, smoothed by sand and time...

There was a lady on the beach with her little dogs and (as always happens) the kids and dogs were magnetically drawn to each other ;).  We started chatting and the kids told her that we were hunting sea glass.  She told us that some very old pieces have been found amongst the rocks because there is an 18th century shipwreck that lies beneath the sand, right where we were standing!  Parts of this wooden ship peek out of the sand from time to time as the sands shift and shift again.  Of course the kids were about to explode with excitement to show her the piece that Trevor had found in that very spot.  She oohed and aahed and made them all very excited with thoughts of long buried treasures that could possibly be sitting beneath their feet :).

All around the rocks were saltwater snails.  Lots of snails!  We had to be careful not to step on them...

As much fun as the rock were for climbing, the sand was for running...

I love seeing my kids so happy just to "be" that they can't help but run around and around :).

We made our way to the other end of the beach and more rocks to explore...

More sea glass was found...

...and MORE SNAILS!!!  I have never seen so many in one place before!

As we got into our car to leave, we noticed a gorgeous sunset just around the next bend.  Ya'll know I had to get myself right back out of that car and soak it in :)...

SO beautiful!

When the sun had left the sky, we left Kennebunk Beach and continued on our drive south.  Just about ten minutes down the road we came to the Maine Diner.  They had a big sign outside proclaiming their fame...it worked!  We stopped there for our last dinner in Maine.  Several of us had the crab cake sandwiches and they were really good (it's not something I usually care for and I even liked it).  Oh, and my youngest says to tell you they have the best waffles ever...complete with strawberries and whipped cream :).
