This was the day before Ashlyn's surgery. The boys had went fishing on the Intracoastal Waterway with their dad, the girls and I stayed home to go for one last walk on the beach...
We walked, waded in the chilly water, and giggled the day away...
The girls found some periwinkles in the edge of the surf and enjoyed watching them burrow in the sand...
...and stick out their siphons in the water.
We had planned to eat a big "last lunch" at the seafood restaurant on the beach since Ash would be restricted to soups for the next who-knows-how-long. When we got there, they were closed for the month of December so we just played on the playground equipment behind the restaurant instead...
In the following weeks, I would look at that last picture of Ashlyn smiling and having fun on the beach and my heart would drop. I would think to myself..."what have we done?"... She had a LOT of swelling for quite some time after her surgery, a few days of fainting every time she tried to simply walk to the next room, and of course the fact that she couldn't eat anything that wasn't liquid...scary stuff for this momma.
We hunkered down and let her little body rest and heal (she is doing great now, btw). It was more than a month before we set foot back on the beach.
**Up until this point, my mom was still in decent health...her decline hadn't yet begun. It was coming very soon, though...
