It was a Sunday, so that meant the Indian Pass Raw Bar was closed. If it had been open, we definitely would have stopped in for some fresh oysters. So good :).
The boys wanted to try fishing over on the pass, but it was not a good day for it. Too much rain upriver making the water look like chocolate milk.
For anyone that doesn't know-Indian Pass is the spot where the Apalachicola River makes it's last coastal run before it completely ends in the Gulf of Mexico.
There is an island just offshore that you can take a shuttle boat over to: St. Vincent Island.
They have special hunts over there for an exotic species of deer called Sambar Deer. Look it up, it's a pretty interesting place.
This beach is in Gulf County, which means driving is allowed on the sand (with a purchased permit). There weren't any cars, but we were passed by several golf carts while we were taking our walk. One couple stopped to talk to us and told us a story of Spanish doubloons that were found in the area.
We didn't find any coins :), but we did find lots of driftwood and huge cockle shells.
Since the fishing was a no go on the pass and we already had our bait (live shrimp), we decided to drive over to the state park on Cape San Blas and try it over there.
The water was really rough, so no fishing there either. Instead, we got out our nets and let the kids scoop for creatures along the bayside marina walls...
They caught different things...crabs, little fish, sea urchins...
We were walking along the shoreline and started noticing sea urchin shells. Lots of them! All along in a line...
It was so weird! We have been to that same bay many (many!) times and never have we seen so many urchin shells like that.
I wonder what happened to them?...
There were also several horseshoe crab shells laying around. That is normal, though. You can pretty much always find those there...
When the kids had their fill of exploring, we called it a day and headed home...stopping a couple more times along the way to admire some deer...
...and the sunset, of course :)
